Twenty-Nine COUNTRIES REPRESENTED AT KUNKEL SOCIETY MEETING IN NORWAY
JMF Sponsors International Immunology Conference

The first international conference combining the Henry Kunkel Society Meeting, the International Workshop on Autoantibodies and Autoimmunity and the International Conference on Idiotypes and Disease was held in Oslo, Norway. The major sponsor was The Jeffrey Modell Foundation.

Over 200 scientists and immunologists from 29 different countries convened for the four-day meeting. Dr. Jacob P. Natvig, President of the Henry Kunkel Society served as conference chairman and welcomed the attendees. Nobel Prize Recipient Peter Doherty, MD presented the keynote address entitled, "Cell Mediated Immunity to Viruses and the Potential for Autoreactivity". Over 40 scientific presentations followed over the next 4 days.

A special section entitled "Immune Deficiency and Autoimmunity: Two ends of the Spectrum" featured presentations by JMF Science Advisory Board Members Dr. Fred Rosen, CBR Harvard Medical School, Dr. Max D. Cooper, Department of Immunology Birmingham AL, and Dr. Alain Fischer of Hospital Necker-Enfants Malade in Paris, France. The closing lecture was delivered by Dr. J. Donald Capra, incoming President of the Henry Kunkel Society. The speaker's summaries and abstracts were published in the Scandinavian Journal of Immunology, 1999 vol. 50. The social program included visits to the Viking Ship Museum, the Kon Tiki Raft Museum and a tour of the Edvard Munch Museum. The Jeffrey Modell Foundation has supported the Henry Kunkel society educational events through its affiliation and membership
on the Rockefeller University Council.
